Know More Abouts Depression Medication
December 25, 2008

It is an unfortunate fact that many people who constantly feel sad do it alone and never ask for the help they are entitled to from health care professionals. Medical science has moved on a great deal with a number of depression treatments now possible plus depression medications that are likely to make the condition more bearable if not cure it completely. Although it can be costly, depression, when caught early on, is curable using medication and therapy treatment combined but this may be too expensive for many. The range of depression treatments and therapies currently used by psychiatrists primarily revolve around cognitive behavior and interpersonal therapy.
Both actually produce fruitful and positive results even for just short-term sessions of around ten to twenty weeks and are almost always enough to get a depression patient started on their recovery towards a sound mental health. Early diagnosis is the key to a speedy recovery and the obvious need to know exactly what type of depression is being suffered whether it is manic depression, clinical or another type. Your doctor will be able to recommend what type of treatment and depression medication required as they do differ considerably and no-one wants to make the situation worse. There is actually a surprisingly wide variety of medications available to help treat those who are suffering from depressive disorders.
There are three main groups of medication including the tricyclics and the more modern and commonly used selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors and the monoamine oxidase inhibitors. Unfortunately the tricyclics have more side-effects so tend not to be prescribed with the same frequency as the newer types. Sometimes, doctors actually find it more effective to mix up these medications, depending on the needs of the individual. If the doctor believes it will benefit the patient he will use as many of the drugs together as he believes necessary.
Despite the advances, it is still not an exact science and often the dosage may be increased or even lowered to suit the individual’s needs. However, when it comes to taking these drugs, patients are highly advised to never mix up depression medications; as well as change which dosages to take without consulting their doctors first. In the past, depression patients have mistaken sedatives and anti-anxiety pills for anti-depressants with bad results so this is something to be avoided. Although often prescribed as a combination treatment with other medication, anti-anxiety drugs are not used to cure the problem.
Often confused as part of the depression medication, their real purpose is merely to reduce the stress levels of the patient while he continues to take the other drugs. Many people prescribed with tricyclic medication will experience some of the more common side-effects. Strangely, quite a few users do not appear to mind the side effects for the tricyclic variety and function normally while using them. It is always advisable if you are having a reaction to any type of drug to inform your doctor immediately.
