Sildenafil citrate, sold as Viagra is a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension. It was developed and marketed by the pharmaceutical giant Pfizer. It acts by inhibiting an enzyme that regulates blood flow in the penis. Since hitting the market in1998, sildenafil has been the prime treatment for erectile dysfunction.

Sildenafil commonly known as viagra was synthesized by a group scientists working at Pfizer’s research lab in Kent, England. Clinical trails under Ian Osterloh suggested drug’s effect on penile erection. Pfizer then decided to bring it into the market, so patented it in 1996 and was approved by US Food and Drug Administration on March 27, 1998.

It is annual sales exceeded $ 1 billion in its first year after hitting the store shelf.

Peter Dunn and Albert Wood were disputed as the inventors of the drug by Pfizer although their names are on the manufacturing patent application drug.
